We often never think much about it, but we spend much of our adult lives at work. Research has shown that we will spend about 1/3 of our lives at work, which is about 30 percent of our lives (the percentage may vary depending on life expectancy). When we get into the finer details, much of our 24 hours will be spent either at work or sleeping.

Therefore, it makes sense that if you are going to spend much of your 24 hours and a significant part of your life at work, you should be happy while there. Here are some tips on how to be happier at work.

Build relationships

We have often heard that our co-workers are not our friends, and perhaps that may be true. However, if you want to have a happier stay at your workplace, building relationships with your co-workers is crucial. Such work relationships help build emotional support for when things get tough at work. They also help in making the workplace more collaborative and thus, more cohesive, all of which make the workplace function smoothly, thus making us even happier.

You don’t need to be best friends with your co-workers, but you can definitely become better acquaintances.

Celebrate accomplishments

When at work, we often fall into a state of routine that we no longer find any joy in accomplishing things there. But if you want to be happier when at work, this attitude needs to change.

Set work goals and celebrate each milestone at work – big or small. When you celebrate your wins, to get a sense of efficacy and self-confidence, which are part of what happiness is all about.

Find meaning

What does your work mean to you? Why do you wish to spend years at the work you do? If your work is not giving you meaning, which other work would you do?

Meaning and purpose are key cogs of happiness and when you find that in your work, you will be even happier. If you love and enjoy your work, always work with a sense of ‘why’. Why am I still doing this? The answer to this question needs to be positive so that you always have something deep for why you are working.

Our jobs are not who we are, but they are quite close to being who we are. Therefore, if you want to live a happier life, being happier at work will definitely help.
