Chatbot has been part of the internet for a very long time. Many of these chatbots have often been pretty standard and unremarkable, chatting as a machine would.
However, over the past few years, improvements to AI have seen many chatbots become better at holding conversations. The latest to this trend is ChatGPT.
What is ChatGPT?
ChatGPT is a prototype chatbot from the OpenAI company which was created and trained for conversation engagement. This latest AI is perfectly capable of understanding the human speech, and producing writing that could, in certain contexts, make one assume that it was written by another human being. The Chatbot is a lot more ‘natural-sounding’ in its response than other chatbots, even though, it still may not be capable of comprehending the meaning behind the words it makes.
Why ChatGPT is impressive
The main reason as to why many people find the ChatGPT very impressive is because of its uncanny ability to give responses that are a lot more conversational in tone, like for example, how another human being would answer a query in a similar context. Aside from the conversational tone, it also gives more dynamic responses, meaning that, depending on the prompt, it can provide descriptions, provide answers and solutions to complex questions and solve layout problems.
Among its functions can be generate content, including writing scripts, provide recommendations and answer customer queries.
Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, said the system was a demonstration of what was to be possible with AI.
“Soon, you will be able to have helpful assistants that talk to you, answer questions and give advice,” he told The Guardian.
With such dynamic and well-written responses, there are fears that the chatbot could be a signifier that humans might get replaced. But not so fast.
ChatGPT’s shortcomings
Despite its impressive tonal and dynamic responses, tech experts believe the chatbot is still a long way from replacing humanity. For starters, the ChatGPT, for all its impressive responses, lacks the nuances, critical thinking skills and proper decision-making to successfully upend a human writer. Its prose is formulaic and can be a bit boring the deeper you read into them. It also gets some things factually wrong.
Thus, while you should care about ChatGPT as an impressive advancement in technology, the bot is nowhere close to replacing humanity in its current state.
