Goethe University in Frankfurt is a top international research university that is ranked among the best 150 universities, based on the 2018 Shanghai rankings.

The university was founded in 1914 through private funding. Primarily, Jewish sponsors were the main funders of the formation of the university. Since then, Geothe Institut has been a pioneer in areas of social justice, economics and sociology, quantum physics, medicine, brain research, and labor laws.

Goethe is named after Johanna Wolfgang von Goethe, who was a writer and thinker born in Frankfurt. Goethe was renowned for his exceptional contribution in various fields such as philosophy, literature, and science.

The university is the third-largest in Germany, with over 48,000 students. Indeed, the university enrolled 48,107 students in the winter semester in 2017/2018. Of these, 14,105 were first-time students getting enrolled in their first semester, while 7,661 were international students from 136 different countries.

Goethe Institut still relies on public funding as was awarded 196.7 million euros of external funding. This included funding that was under the state of Hesse Campaign for Development of Science and Economic Excellence (LOEWE). The university also has 610 Deutschlandstipendien and 1.098 million euros in supporting donations, which saw it once again ranked top among German Universities in this category.
