For a lot of women, getting into tech or studying courses that lead into tech has always been a tough path. The culture around these have always been excluding women, but Girls in Tech is here to help bring more women into the tech world.
Girls in Tech is a global, non-profit organization that was started in 2007 by Adriana Gascoigne in San Francisco. In the 15 years since then, the organization has grown to have more than 50 chapters across six continents: North America, Asia, Europe, The Middle East, South America and Africa.
Gascoigne started the organization when she noticed that she was one of very few women in the company she worked. So, Girls in Tech became her way of trying to encourage more women to get into tech.
“Having someone believe in you, listen to you and encourage you through career highs and lows is invaluable, especially for women who have been historically underrepresented in tech for so long.” Gascoigne said, as quoted by Medium.
Empowerment
Girls in Tech is focused in engaging, educating and empowering girls and women passionate about technology. So, they will provide networking events, job advertisements and other programs which support women in tech, including mentorship and exchange programs. And the organization welcomes women from all backgrounds, meaning that there is a diverse group of women to encounter when you get into the program, thus helping your build stronger communities.
Girls in Tech aims to provide a framework for women to make advancements in the STEM industry (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and also support innovative women who want to get into the high-tech industry. So, this means that women who own start-ups and entrepreneurs looking to grow their business can also find their support in Girls in Tech.
