In the third entry of our series celebrating seven incredible women this Women’s History Month, we have Lydia Gathoni.
Lydia Gathoni, a member of African Women in Tech (AWIT), is a Manager at Robotic Process Automation and is a woman who is incredibly knowledgeable in tech matters. She is widely knowledgeable in various fields, including in Data Science, Machine Learning, System Development, Analytics, Mathematics, Statistics, Python/R/SQL, and Leadership.
On why she loves her job, Lydia she enjoys efficiency and thus enjoys developing processes that help businesses benefit from automation, making things work much more smoothly and without using too much time and labor. Therefore, she has helped her organization automate many of its repetitive processes. Through offering RPA solutions, many manual and repetitive functions have been automated and, thus, have seen a reduced turnaround time, making Lydia Gathoni proud.
Achievements
On what her greatest achievement was, the automation she has developed have helped her get multiple employee excellence awards at Robotic Process Automation. She also got promoted just a year into her job at RPA. She has also been recognized as one of the Top 30 under 30 Rising Stars in Data Analytics 2021 by Business of Data.
On how she fights biases against women in tech, Gathoni says she shows up. Showing up and exceeding expectations helps you earn a seat on the table, she says. Also, being involved with the community and mentoring young women enables more women to gain confidence and take their place. With more women joining tech, the biases will slowly be erased as the new women bring in more changes in the work culture.
She advises women joining the industry: “Be so good that you cannot be ignored. Speak up your ideas, and do not shy away from projects. Keep your head high and always contribute.”
